Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and adjoining areas in West Bengal after an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook parts of Bangladesh on Friday (February 27, 2026).

Panicked residents evacuated their buildings and ran into the streets, waiting for the tremors to pass while also anticipating aftershocks.

The earthquake occurred around 1.22 pm on Friday (February 27, 2026) and lasted for several seconds. Although the epicenter of the quake was in Bangladesh, strong tremors were felt in multiple areas across the state, including North 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Howrah.

An office worker from south Kolkata said: “I left my lunch and ran after I felt my chair shaking.” Many like him were seen rushing out of offices and residential buildings as a precaution.

The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 90 kilometers from Kolkata on the Bangladesh border. Many felt ceiling fans swinging and windows shaking due to the impact of the tremors.

One building on Ganesh Chandra Street reportedly tilted, while one in Lake Town sustained cracks due to the collision.

The windows of a building in Bashirhat area of ​​North 24 Parganas were damaged. In the same area, a house was reported to have collapsed in the Minakhan area, 40 kilometers from the epicenter. Many buildings in the area were also damaged. No injuries have been reported so far.

The state government has not yet analyzed the damage caused by the earthquakes, and is awaiting specific numbers.
