Three earthquakes were reported in Nebraska on Sunday; Interaction of community members

COWLES, Neb. (KOLN) – Nebraskans may have felt the tremor Sunday, as a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was reported south of Hastings, three miles east of Cowles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About an hour and a half later, another earthquake was reported nearby, and the US Geological Survey reported it as a 2.6 magnitude earthquake. On Sunday night, the US Geological Survey reported a third 2.6-magnitude earthquake.

People from Beaver Crossing to Lincoln reported feeling the quake, noting a slight rumble in the ground or rattling in their homes.

According to the USGS, the earthquake was first recorded at 12:59 p.m., was about 2 miles deep, and traveled at least 86 miles.

The second earthquake was recorded at 2:30 pm, not far from the first earthquake. The depth was about 3.5 miles.

The third earthquake was recorded at 8:45 pm south of the first two earthquakes. The depth was just over three miles.

11/10 News spoke with two people on Sunday who experienced the earthquake.

“I was looking at my phone on the table and at first I thought it was the refrigerator or something,” Richard Webb said.

Some have misinterpreted the earthquake as something else, whether it was a passing train or a shaking dog.

“Pretty much what happened is I was lying in bed, and all of a sudden I felt like shaking,” David Crable said. “I thought it was my dog ​​shaking behind me, but then I thought it couldn’t be my dog.”
