“This is a very large earthquake for Nebraska”; Expert reacts to multiple earthquakes reported on Sunday

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – If you haven’t felt it, you’ve probably at least heard by now about Sunday’s earthquakes and shockwaves that spread from central Nebraska to here in D.C.

The earthquake, which was felt by many, was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) near Cowles, Nebraska, with a magnitude of 4.1. About an hour and a half later, another nearby earthquake measuring 2.6 magnitude was reported. At 8:30 p.m. Sunday, south of where the first two quakes occurred, the US Geological Survey reported a third quake measuring 2.6.

“Well, I think my first thoughts were, ‘This is a pretty big earthquake in Nebraska,’” said Oliver Boyd, who was a research geophysicist with the USGS for more than 20 years.

Boyd said survey data shows the area where the three quakes occurred on Sunday has seen more than 20 smaller quakes since 2022.

“In Nebraska, you know, you’re kind of in the middle of the North American plate,” he said. “But there are still stresses acting on the plate, and from time to time, the earthquakes subside. Small earthquakes will likely continue in that area.”

According to Boyd, the causes of the earthquake so far could range from major fault lines from the natural movement of mountains to oil companies injecting water into reservoirs to increase production.

“Basically, all this water is putting pressure on the faults, pushing them apart,” he said. “It may not take much pressure to cause a fault to slip and cause an earthquake.”

Boyd added that he and his colleagues did not yet realize this was a factor on Sunday, but researchers at the California Survey’s Earthquake Sciences Center are now working to rule it out with certainty.
