There is no tsunami threat in California after the Aleutian Islands earthquake

An earthquake that struck the Aleutian Islands in western Alaska on Tuesday did not trigger any tsunami warnings, federal agencies said.

The National Tsunami Warning Center said scientists analyzed the event at 9:55 a.m. Pacific time on March 4, 2026, and determined that “there was no tsunami, and no risk of a recent earthquake,” and located it about 0.25 miles southeast of Boulder Island.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.4, and its epicenter was about 224 kilometers (139 miles) east-southeast of the Attu station and at a depth of 10 kilometers. Preliminary estimates of size and location can vary between agencies as data is refined.

At 11:00 a.m., the National Weather Service announced that “there is no tsunami threat in California due to this recent earthquake near Alaska.”

The USGS rated the quake a VI, meaning strong shaking with light damage, on its scale from I to X+.

A series of small earthquakes followed the initial earthquake within the Aleutian Arc toward Alaska.

The Aleutian Arc extends about 3,000 kilometers from the Gulf of Alaska to Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, marking where the Pacific tectonic plate is subducted beneath the North American plate. This subduction zone forms the Aleutian Islands and the deep offshore Aleutian Trench, and is responsible for frequent seismic activity in the region.
