The first anniversary of the Myanmar earthquake is approaching

Marking the first anniversary of the Myanmar earthquake on March 28, 2025, Archbishop Marco Tin Win of Mandalay – one of the worst-hit areas – in a letter to donors to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), noted the suffering his people have endured and expressed gratitude for the help they received.

“In recent years, the people of Myanmar have suffered a series of crises: the COVID-19 pandemic; political unrest, conflict and displacement; the collapse of the economy; and recurring natural disasters,” the bishop notes. “These difficulties could have destroyed the hope of many institutions. However, thanks to God’s grace, the unity of the faithful and the generosity of priests, religious and catechists have contributed to the support of our Church.”

The bishop recalls that the earthquake left “collapsed homes, destroyed villages, and many families who lost their loved ones and everything they owned,” and stresses that “many continue the difficult journey to rebuild their lives.”

He also highlighted the aid received by the Association of Christian Churches: “In the midst of this suffering, your generosity has been a powerful sign of hope. Through your support, food, medicine, shelter and comfort have reached many wounded and displaced people. More than just material assistance, your kindness has reminded our people that they have not been forgotten.”

Despite some progress in reconstruction, the situation remains fragile for many communities due to ongoing armed conflict and lack of basic services.

In this context, the Archbishop calls on people to live this moment through faith: “As we approach Palm Sunday, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem with hope, even as he led his way to the cross. Our people know this journey well – from suffering to hope.”

“Indeed, we, the people of Good Friday, move through the silence and uncertainty that surrounds Holy Saturday, but are confident that the dawn of Easter will come.” He adds: “The cross is not the end, but rather leads to resurrection.”

In reaching out to the Universal Church, “under the leadership of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV,” the Archbishop is confident that Myanmar will “one day witness the dawn of peace, reconciliation and renewal.”

“Through your compassion, you help us remain healers of the wounded and pilgrims of hope among our people. On behalf of the Diocese of Mandalay, the Church and the people of Myanmar, I sincerely thank you and assure you of our prayers,” he concluded.

Aid to the Church in Need calls on all benefactors and friends of the charity to join the Day of Prayer, Repentance and Fasting on March 26, called by the Myanmar Bishops’ Conference to seek peace, “especially in the Middle East and in Myanmar.”
