A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island on Thursday, briefly prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning.

The quake shook buildings across the region and prompted residents to flee outside, but authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The epicenter of the quake was about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Te Anau, the gateway to the tourist hotspot of Fiordland, according to New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The agency initially estimated the magnitude of the quake, which occurred at 9.14 pm local time (0914 GMT), at 6.3 before revising it to 5.9.

The tsunami warning has been lifted, but the agency said it expects coastal areas to see “unusually strong currents and unpredictable waves on shore.”

“People on boats, lifeboards and anchors in these areas should abandon their boats/vessels and move to shore. Do not return to boats unless requested by officials,” she said.

GeoNet, New Zealand’s official geological hazards monitoring agency, said that more than 20,000 people reported feeling the earthquake.

A local resident who works at the Fiordland Hotel in Te Anau said she felt shaking for a minute and thought the quake was “quite strong”.

“In the hotel, the atmosphere was shaking, but nothing moved in the hotel,” Mylene Puyat told Reuters.

Another resident told local outlet Otago Daily Times that the quake was shaking “long and loud” and sounded “like a train.”

“The walls were definitely moving,” they said.

Residents described a loud rumble before the shaking began. The Invercargill resident said her “bed was shaking and the house was creaking” after they “heard it rumbling before it started shaking and rolling”.

Award-winning broadcaster Marcus Loesch was live on air in his Invercargill studio when the earthquake struck.

“Wait, wait, there’s been an earthquake,” he told a Marcus Lush Nights caller during the live broadcast.

“I’m just going to try to figure out whether I stay on deck or just leave,” he said.

“What do I do.. do I stay… guess [there’s] “There really aren’t a lot of options,” Mr. Loesch said.

Te Anau is a small town located on the South Island of New Zealand, and is the main gateway to Fiordland National Park, one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
