‘I felt like a truck’: Locals describe 5.9 magnitude Southland earthquake

A Wanaka couple says a powerful earthquake has struck the South Island and triggered a tsunami warning that sounded like a truck driving past.

The quake struck an area 40 kilometers north of Te Anau at 9.14pm on Thursday.

It was originally said to have a magnitude of 6.3 but has since been reduced to 5.9.

Evacuations were called and a tsunami warning was issued, although the evacuations were cancelled, downgraded to a warning and then canceled altogether.

“The warning has been canceled because no tsunami signals have been detected by New Zealand Geosciences for the past approximately two hours after the event,” the National Emergency Management Agency said at 11.26pm.

“This indicates that there is no ongoing tsunami activity affecting the area, and the threat has now passed,” he added.

Wanaka couple, Mullion and Ken, said they had “just gone to bed” when they were awakened by the shaking.

“We both woke up to the bed moving and it felt like a truck was driving by the bedroom.”

A resident of Bannockburn in Christchurch described feeling “long, shallow waves”.

Christchurch resident Vicky Newbigin said she felt the quake from her apartment on the 10th floor.

“To me it looked more like a rolling motion… probably because Christchurch is a fair distance away and I think it was a wave of ground movement rather than a sudden shock.”

She said she has felt some aftershocks since then.

GeoNet has reported several smaller earthquakes since the initial tremor, although all were of “mild” or “weak” intensity.

Southland Mayor Rob Scott said he had heard of possible damage to homes “in terms of cracking and that sort of thing.”

He is currently in Auckland but says he has heard from people in Milford Sound who “did the right thing” and reached higher ground at the time.

“It’s been very shaky out there… but good to hear… there’s no need to evacuate,” Scott told Nights.

New Zealand geoscientist Bill Fry said the quake would have generated strong tremors near the epicenter.

He said he hoped the aftershocks would reduce and not cause damage.

He added: “We are still following the developments of the aftershock situation, vigilantly and with intense monitoring to see if there are any larger aftershocks that may have the potential to cause damage or landslides.”

There have been quite a few large earthquakes in the area in the past two decades, including the 7.8-magnitude Dusky Sounds Earthquake in 2009, Fry said.
