According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake had a magnitude of 2.7 and occurred around 8:04 PM EDT. The epicenter was about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of Dillsboro, or about 40 miles west-southwest of Asheville. The earthquake was very superficial, with a depth of about 0.1 km. For this reason, some people in the area reported feeling shaking despite its relatively low intensity. As of this writing, more than 800 people have reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS. A second earthquake was recorded in the same area later that night. This earthquake had a magnitude of about 2.2 and occurred around 11:13 PM EST. About a dozen people reported feeling the second quake. There were no reports of damage or injuries as a result of either earthquake.
