The Pillar of Religion by Dr. Franklin L. Kirksey: The Easter Earthquake
Written by Dr. Franklin L. Kirksey
According to the National Earthquake Information Center, about 20,000 earthquakes occur around the world each year, or approximately fifty-five per day. In Matthew 28:2a we read, “And behold, there occurred a great earthquake.” This message has a threefold purpose.
First, the historical fact of the Easter earthquake must be emphasized. It literally happened! Remember, this earthquake occurred hundreds of years before the Richter scale used to measure seismic activity. This would have been off the charts because Matthew described it as a “great earthquake.” A less serious earthquake occurred when Jesus was crucified. We read in Matthew 27:51-53, “And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep arose, and they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, and they entered the holy city and appeared to many.” There have been earthquakes at Easter in subsequent years, but this one falls into a special category. The earthquake that occurred at the time of Jesus’ horrific crucifixion shows how the earth shook in sad despair, compared to the great earthquake in the sheer jubilation of his glorious resurrection.
Second, you must address the metaphor of the Easter earthquake. A metaphor is a comparison using like or like. William Willimon preached a sermon entitled “Easter as an Earthquake.” There were aftershocks and shock waves emanating from that evangelical event. This event changed history dramatically, but did it change you dynamically?
Third, you must apply a biblical focus to the Easter earthquake. Someone asks: Are we so satisfied with Easter that it no longer excites us? Taking a fresh look at Easter from a biblical perspective can shake some of your false assumptions about yourself and God. Have you been shaken by the reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Remember, He not only rose, but was the first fruit of the resurrection. Paul writes: “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came by man, so also was the resurrection of the dead by man. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ will all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, and then those who are Christ’s at his coming” (1 Corinthians 15:20-23). Paul explains: “And I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which you have received and in which you stand, by which also you will be saved, if you hold fast the words which I preached to you, unless you believe in vain. For I delivered to you first of all what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he rose on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Make sure you believe and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
