A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck in the northern Molucca Sea off the coast of Ternate, Indonesia, killing at least one person and issuing a tsunami warning that was later lifted.

Thursday’s quake, initially recorded at a magnitude of 7.8, occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles), greater than the early figure of 10 kilometers (six miles), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The epicenter of the quake was about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Ternate, in Indonesia’s North Maluku province.

Local authorities in some cities, such as Ternate and Tidore, were urged to prepare citizens for evacuation, while Metro TV news channel broadcast images of damaged buildings.

One person was killed when a building collapsed in the city of Manado in North Sulawesi province, a local search and rescue official told AFP.

“We felt the earthquake strongly in the vicinity of Manado… One person died and another was injured in his leg,” George Liu Mercy Randang told AFP by phone. He added that the victim was “buried under the rubble” of a collapsed building.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially said dangerous tsunami waves were likely within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of the epicenter along the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Within half an hour of the quake, waves as high as 75 cm were recorded in northern Minahasa and 20 cm in Bitung, both north of the island of Sulawesi, according to the Indonesian Geological Agency BMKG.

Waves measuring thirty centimeters high were also recorded in North Maluku Province.

The PTWC lifted its warning just over two hours after the quake, saying the tsunami threat “has now passed.”
