WCK responds to a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia

WCK’s relief team provides meals to communities in Indonesia, where a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck in the Molucca Sea off the coast of North Sulawesi.

Tsunami waves formed in the immediate aftermath, and strong aftershocks continue to cause damage. The initial earthquake destroyed many homes and businesses in Sulawesi. Our teams are working closely with restaurant partners and local community members to provide meals to affected families.

WCK teams responded in Sulawesi in 2021, when a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the island city of Mamuju. By working alongside our local restaurant partners and team members, we were able to reach out to the most impacted communities and deliver tens of thousands of meals.

When the earthquake struck Betong, a coastal city on the northeastern tip of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, Muhilda Parumalang and her family did what thousands of coastal families do: they ran to higher ground. Her husband, a wooden boat builder, knows these waters well. When the tsunami warning cleared and they returned to assess the damage to their home and workshop, WCK teams were already on the ground providing them with nutritious meals.
