New Mexico earthquake: Tremors were felt in Carlsbad, Roswell, Artesia and Atoka

A moderate-magnitude earthquake has struck parts of southeastern New Mexico, with tremors felt in cities such as Carlsbad, Roswell, Artesia and Atoka, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

On Monday, April 6, at 2:01 PM local time, the earthquake occurred 14 miles from Artesia, New Mexico, in the United States. The initial magnitude of the earthquake, whose epicenter was in Ede County, was 4.3 M. Eddy County is located about 9 miles south of Atoka and 18.5 miles northwest of Carlsbad.

Residents throughout the area reported feeling brief tremors, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

Where did you feel the tremors?

The quake’s tremors were widely felt throughout southeastern New Mexico, including Carlsbad, Roswell, Artesia and Atoka.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) initially reported that the tremor was strong enough to be felt throughout the region.

The USGS notes that the quake may also have had a minor impact as far away as Alamogordo and Hobbs in New Mexico and El Paso and Odessa in Texas.

Residents took to social media to share their experiences, with many reporting a sudden tremor followed by a few seconds of shaking.

Livingston resident Wheeler shared his experience on the EMSC platform, saying, “I was in the kitchen, and everything started shaking in multiple directions. Big tremor, followed by smaller tremors. 30-40 seconds.”

“I work at a walk-in clinic inside a grocery store, and I felt the vibration in the building,” another Carlsbad resident noted on the EMSC website.

What caused the earthquake in New Mexico?

More than 3,000 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher have been reported in the region since 2020, according to USGS statistics, indicating a recent uptick in seismic activity in the region of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico.

According to the USGS, earthquakes in this region are often associated with natural tectonic activity and human-caused factors such as wastewater injection from oil and gas production.
