For Judd, scoring that goal was vital, and not just because it helped the upstart Quakes move into third place in the Western Conference.

“I had to use a celebration that would honor Bobby and be kind of fun and recognised,” he said.

“I think some people took it from the wrong side, as it was disrespectful, but it was meant to honor my dog ​​and other dogs and create awareness of situations like I just went through.”

Some of those who found the celebration disrespectful appear to reside at Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee, which fined Judd an undisclosed sum this week for his “inappropriate gesture” following his goal.

Judd admitted that he found the fine “a bit surprising.”

The fine drained Goode’s savings a little, but it didn’t come close to Bobby’s medical bills, which he said cost him more than $30,000.
