Orban admits defeat in democracy earthquake – Eurasia Review
Written by Eddie Wax, Matias Varga, and Bruno Waterfield
(EurActiv) – Viktor Orban has conceded defeat after losing the national election to a record turnout of Hungarians in an earthquake to European politics.
With voter turnout reaching 78%, the Hungarian prime minister – who received strong support from Donald Trump – admitted that he had lost his grip on power after 16 years of crushing setback.
He said, “The election result is understandable and clear. For us, it is painful but unambiguous.”
“The coming days will be about healing wounds. I wish everyone good health and better evenings than tonight. May God protect us all – go Hungarians!”
His defeat pushed Peter Magyar and his TISA party into power with an overwhelming two-thirds majority, according to preliminary results, with 98% of the vote, giving him 138 seats ahead of Fidesz, which won 55 seats.
“Together we replaced the Orban regime, liberated Hungary and took back our country,” he told cheering supporters in Budapest. “Today, my friends, we performed a miracle. Hungary wrote history.”
After less than two years at the helm of the Tisza movement, Magyar, 45, is expected to bring Hungary back into the European mainstream.
“We have been waiting for this for twenty years,” said Peter Kiss, a man in his 30s celebrating with other Tisza supporters on the banks of the Danube. “Finally we have joined the real Europe, with the end of the Russian regime.”
After fears that Fidesz would not recognize the result, Tamás Soljuk, Hungarian President, said that “the 2026 elections were conducted correctly.” He said: “There is clear popular confidence in the conduct of the elections in our country,” referring to the record turnout rate. “The election results will be a legitimate mandate for where the country should go.”
End of an era
Viktor Orban, Europe’s longest-serving democratically elected leader, 62, who entered politics as an anti-communist student dissident, has been denied a run for a fifth term at the head of a regime he described as an “illiberal democracy”.
Orban has reshaped his country’s political system with reforms that Hungarians would find difficult to reverse, consolidating a system that has inspired populist and nationalist movements across the West — including Donald Trump.
Orban said: “We do not yet know what the result of these elections means for the nation, and time will decide that.” “We will serve our homeland and the Hungarian nation even in opposition. The task before us is clear. The burden of governance does not burden us; now our task is to strengthen our communities.”
The US president offered full personal support to the Hungarian leader and promised to swing US “economic power” behind him, but the defeat shows the limits of Trump’s reach.
During his time in office, Orban proudly wore the mantle of the EU’s most uncompromising leader and Putin’s closest ally in Europe, a reflection of the “warm friendship” between Trump and the authoritarian Russian president.
Russia – and allegations of a high-level Russian spy cell trying to subvert the vote – have become a rift issue in a country that still bears scars of Soviet occupation and a nationalist tradition rooted in the bloody historical memory of Hungary’s 1956 uprising.
new beginning
Magyar, 45, left the ruling Fidesz party just two years ago, following a scandal that forced the resignation of several prominent figures, including the resignation of his ex-wife, Judit Varga, who was often nominated to succeed Orbán.
He pledged to reset relations with the European Union, unleash frozen financing, and limit Russian influence, while removing obstacles to Ukrainian loans.
Magyar framed the vote as a choice between “East or West,” echoing a young Orban’s 1989 call for elections to end Soviet rule and for Russian forces to leave Hungary. Crowds celebrating his victory at a rally in Budapest chanted: “Go, Russians.” “We are the successors to the freedom fighters of 1956,” said Andrew, a 60-year-old construction worker.
The campaign was marked by recriminations, with Orban alleging opposition collusion with foreign intelligence, while Magyar warned of efforts to disrupt the vote in key electoral districts.
