Series of industry-linked earthquakes strike north Edmonton – Edmonton

People who live north of Edmonton say over the past three weeks they have felt their homes moving and the ground shaking due to several earthquakes.

Experts say this happens often in that area, and they have a good idea why.

Callie McDonald has lived in Sturgeon County, near Gibbons, for 30 years. But on April 1, he experienced something he had never felt before: an earthquake.

“It’s not like they’re shaking the whole house or anything like that, but they’re loud and annoying,” McDonald said.

And it wasn’t just one. McDonald has seen dozens over the past three weeks.

He added: “It can happen in the middle of the night, and it can happen during the day.”

“It’s not about the damage they’re doing or anything like that. It’s just the inconvenience of it.”

The Alberta Energy Regulatory Authority’s website lists more than 30 seismic events in that area. They are all considered “known cause,” meaning they do not occur naturally.

It also indicates that between January and March 2025, they recorded 862 seismic activities across the province. In the period from January to March 2026, there were 1,520.

The Canadian Seismological Service has detected seven earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher and says they are all linked to industry. Three earthquakes had a magnitude greater than 4.

“When I looked at the earthquake record, there were very few earthquakes in this area. In fact, most of the earthquakes we recorded were in the last three weeks,” said Stephen Crane, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

“How you feel an earthquake depends largely on the size of the earthquake and how far you are from its epicenter. Certainly, for larger events, you can feel them very strongly. In general, we don’t start to see damage from earthquakes until earthquakes reach about magnitude five or greater.”

The Alberta Ministry of the Environment and Protected Areas told Global News that Shell Canada reported the seismic events, which are related to the Scotford Upgrader Program and AER-related CO2 injection site operations.

They say Shell has implemented protocols to monitor and mitigate the impact.

“Shell has a duty to return the injection well to a safe condition before resuming operations, which may include changing injection thresholds or proposing new mitigation measures,” the statement said.

Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean says industry-related earthquakes pose a serious problem for the province.

“When it happens, we get reports of it, and we have to make changes accordingly, either based on the technology being used or the operator. We do that, and we are very diligent and supervise those situations closely,” Jin said.

The Alberta Energy Regulator says this may not be the last of the activity in Sturgeon County.

“There is a possibility of more earthquakes, but we expect seismic activity associated with this event to decrease over the coming days,” the statement read.

MacDonald hopes he won’t feel much after that.

“To go from what I can tell from having no earthquakes at all, to having 30 earthquakes or aftershocks in less than 30 days, is very strange. If someone was doing this, it could be stopped.”
