In 2024, reports surfaced of a highly sophisticated cyber-espionage campaign against US telecommunications companies that some analysts believe reached the Chinese government. The group behind this campaign, later named Salt Typhoon, is believed to have quietly infiltrated critical US telecommunications infrastructure to gather private information about influential Americans, including Donald Trump. In the process, they may also collect the data of millions of ordinary Americans. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the Salt Typhoon. We speak with former Deputy National Security Adviser Anne Neuberger, who was working in Joe Biden’s White House when the attacks first came to light.
