“You have to hit rock bottom to move on.” Earthquakes, Power Struggles, and 16 Songs “It Sounds Like People Fighting”: The Strange Story of The Black Crowes’ Lost Album, Tall
In the spring of 1994, The Black Crowes were putting the finishing touches on their third album at Conway Studios in Los Angeles, with brothers Chris and Rich Robinson producing the sessions. The album, the follow-up to the Atlanta, Georgia band’s breakthrough second record, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, was to have a feature-length title, and frontman Chris Robinson promised that the record would have “more of a vibe” than its predecessor, but would also contain “some rock’n’roll and fun.”
Seasoned Black Crowes observers would not have been surprised to learn that the process of making the record was not entirely drama-free, due to the strained nature of Robinson’s brother’s relationship.
“It was pretty bad around January,” the singer admitted to Kerrang! “It was a power struggle, a fight over little things, and it’s bullshit. I always love writing songs with Rich – that part of it we never had any trouble with. Getting along on a personal level was really hard.”
As if that wasn’t enough disruption to contend with, the 1994 Northridge Earthquake struck Los Angeles on January 17.
“Our studio, Conway on Sunset, collapsed,” Robinson told MOJO Magazine. “The ceiling dropped ten feet, and we had to postpone the taping. That really scared everyone: no one could sleep because of the aftershocks and all that.”
However, the timeout had one positive outcome, as it brought the Robinson brothers into contact again.
Chris told Kerrang! “Rich and I sat down and started talking, and it was like, ‘Wow, this is our life, and this is the most important thing to us… You have to hit rock bottom to move on.’”
When asked to provide titles for some of the songs scheduled to feature on the record, Robinson mentioned Thunderstorm 6.25, Evil Eye, and “one song called Feathers, which I really think is something else.”
Robinson suggested that the record would be in stores around September 1, 1994. As it turned out, this was a rather ambitious forecast, because in late August, the singer revealed that his band had scrapped everything they had recorded, and were now starting again from scratch, working with producer Jacques Joseph Puig, who is perhaps best known for his engineering work with artists from the contemporary Christian music scene, as well as albums by Olivia Newton-John, Bette Midler, and Dire Straits.
“We started over from day one and just produced a whole new album,” Robinson said. “I think it’s more dynamic, in terms of performance and sonic meaning. We also gave each song its own space and character.”
And feathers? This person seemed to have completely disappeared from sight.

The Black Crowes’ third album is now tentatively titled Amorica. With “Amor” meaning love, the new record was meant to be “a raw, psychedelic love letter to freedom, brotherhood and the relentless pursuit of art without permission.”
“From the first session, we kept the plot, Bound and Swallowed, high blues, unimaginative, time wiser,” Chris Robinson revealed to Kerrang. “We re-did She Gave Good Sunflower, which we played on the tour, but didn’t record at the first session. Then we wrote some new songs.”
“The new versions are more sophisticated, lively and confident,” Robinson told MOJO. “I didn’t like the previous releases because it sounded like people were fighting – which is cool, but I don’t think it’s cool for us now: it didn’t feel like something cohesive and focused. These new releases feel like everyone is in the same place.”
Amorica was released worldwide on 1 November 1994. The album reached No. 11 in the US and No. 8 in the UK.
When the record was reissued in 1998, two songs from the Tall sessions – Song of the Flesh and Sunday Night Buttermilk Waltz – were added as bonus tracks. Evil Eye, another long-form original track, was re-recorded for 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm, and another song, Tornado, was reworked for Phosphorescent Harvest, Chris Robinson Brotherhood’s third studio album, released in 2014.
And feathers? This eventually appeared on The Lost Crowes, a two-disc box set collecting songs from Tall, and another lost album, Band, recorded and shelved by the band in 1997.
But that’s a whole other story…
