King’s estate tried to sell the toxic land to the council

Channel 4 News has revealed that the royal’s private estate tried to sell land contaminated by illegal toxic waste to the council in Wigan.

In January, Channel 4 News revealed the 25,000-tonne site, dubbed the UK’s “most dangerous illegal dump”, was on land owned by the Duchy of Lancaster, a vast private portfolio of royal estates and properties. When approached about the program, the Duchy of Lancaster said that it had offered to transfer the land to the council last year; however, correspondence obtained through a Freedom of Information request reveals that he actually tried to sell the site at full market price. Wigan Council told Channel 4 News it “respectfully rejected” the Duchy’s bid.
