Your first look at new North Atlantic hurricane and North American earthquake models
It’s hard to believe that Moody’s Exceedance 2026 conference is just over a month away, taking place June 1-4 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
As always, we look forward to welcoming hundreds of leaders from across the (re)insurance industry to Exceedance, for featured keynotes, 50+ breakout sessions, in-depth workshops, and interactive demos. This year’s theme, “Rewrite the Rules of the Game,” explores how risks do not stand still; It moves and develops and requires that we evolve with it.
We also realize that progress doesn’t come from repeating old moves, but from reimagining how the game is played: anticipating what’s next, preparing before it happens, and acting with confidence when it happens.
This transformation will come to life at Exceedance, where some of the most important conversations and developments of the year are taking place. Our entire conference agenda is designed to challenge convention, rethink strategy, and turn vision into action as the risk landscape continues to change.
Opportunities to learn more about Moody’s strategic vision and development roadmap for our global portfolio of disaster models are a regular cornerstone of the Go Beyond agenda, and this year is no exception, especially for the Americas region.
Our biggest news is that over the course of multiple Exceedance sessions and workshops, we plan to share our development plans, scope, and timelines for two key Moody’s RMS™ models: the North Atlantic Hurricane and the North American Earthquake.
Here are some supporting details to serve as the basis for broader discussions in Exceedance 2026.
1. North Atlantic hurricane moves to high definition
As part of a complete reconstruction, Moody’s RMS North Atlantic Hurricane model suite will move to high resolution (HD). A key innovation is the integration of Moody’s RMS US Inland Flood HD model with the new hurricane model, providing a unified wind and flood solution to the market.
At Exceedance 2026, the North Atlantic Hurricane HD Model will be prominently featured, and attendees can learn through a breakout session and accompanying two-hour workshop about the current development scope, rationale, and timelines for the full scope of the North Atlantic Hurricane Model, including:
The motivation and rationale for this update New basin-wide trajectory set for the Atlantic Basin New approaches to modeling risks and vulnerabilities, including Moody’s new risk reference view that reflects the “current climate” and the introduction of our dynamic vulnerability framework Incorporation of hurricanes and floods Developments in the financial model, including expanded support for sub-risk terms and conditions
We will also discuss the planned release strategy and how we can best prepare the market prior to general availability and post-release, including change management, validation, and approval workflow.
If you join us in these sessions, you will discover how these advances improve model reliability, reduce uncertainty, and streamline workflow; Model developments highlighted in partnership with Moody’s Risk Data Lake, which provides native SQL analytics, model validation capabilities and AI-driven portfolio management.
Moody’s recently introduced enhanced risk data helps insurers enrich secondary rates for their exposures, using visibility models and aerial imagery, to help enhance resilience and build on already strong market confidence in our hurricane and flood solutions.
2. North American Earthquake is (also) moving to HD
With a complete reconstruction of the North American seismic model, Moody’s model development team is also undertaking the transition to high resolution (HD), including coverage of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Exceedance 2026 will provide a first look at the new science of earthquake occurrence and risk assessment, as well as a reassessment of earthquake vulnerability.
There will be sessions focusing on updating Moody’s RMS North America Earthquake HD Model, covering the following:
Motivation and rationale for the model update Reimagining hazard modeling by incorporating the 2023 USGS National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) Advances in seismic vulnerability modeling Next steps in model development and market communications Modeling human losses associated with seismic hazards
This comprehensive update will differentiate our model in the industry, providing more robust, decision-ready, consistent and easy-to-use insights.
conclusion
Moody’s Exceedance 2026 is shaping up to be another content-rich, can’t-miss conference for the (re)insurance market and risk management space.
