An earthquake hits Nevada, here’s how to prepare for the next one
The Nevada earthquake has now reached a magnitude of 5.68, see the latest
A 5.68 magnitude earthquake struck the desert east of Reno on April 13. No damage has been reported currently, but aftershocks are expected.
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck about 12 miles from Silver Springs at 1 a.m. on May 1. This earthquake is one of several earthquakes that affected Nevadans this spring.
The high number of earthquakes in Nevada may make residents wonder what to do in the event of an earthquake and what resources to check on when an earthquake occurs.
Here’s a look at what to do when an earthquake strikes.
Earthquake Resources What to do in the event of an earthquake
If you get an alert through the MyShake app or feel the quake, people should “drop down, take cover and hold on,” said John Goodell, senior coordinator of earthquake early warning emergency services at CalOES.
“Everyone needs to understand that it’s not in the hallway. It’s not running out of your house, which is what people may have heard in the past,” Goodell said.
If you’re at home, you’ll want to find something sturdy to drop under, like a table, and cover your head, neck and vital organs, and then hold onto it, Goodell says.
If you’re at a stadium or theater, you’ll want to “fall on the floor in front of your seat or lean back as much as possible, then cover your head with your arms, and hold on to your neck with both hands until the shaking stops,” according to CalOES.
If you are in a store when an earthquake strikes, you will want to stand “next to a shopping cart, under clothing racks, or inside the first level of warehouse shelving, which may provide additional protection.”
If you are outside during an earthquake, move to an empty area if it is safe to do so, and avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings, vehicles, and other hazards. Next, you have to get down, cover and hold on.
If you are driving, you should pull over to the side of the road (avoiding bridges, overpasses, power lines, signs, and other hazards), stop, and apply the parking brake. Stay inside your car until the shaking stops.
How to prepare for an earthquake
Goodale said people should not “wait until they feel the shaking” to start preparing for an earthquake.
“It’s going to be chaotic if there’s an earthquake, especially if it’s a big one,” Goodale said. “So, take these days now to prepare and make a plan.”
Because we can’t predict when an earthquake will strike, “one of the best tools we have right now is the MyShake app,” which is part of https://www.shakealert.org/, said Goodell.
The free smartphone app – developed by the University of California, Berkeley, and available in six different languages - provides early warnings of earthquakes.
“It’s truly a life-saving tool. It can give you seconds of life-saving notifications before you actually feel the vibration,” Goodell said. “So, if you’re in Palm Springs and the earthquake is in Los Angeles, it could give you up to 10 seconds, or maybe up to 30 seconds of notice. So, imagine what you can do in 30 seconds. It may not seem like a long time, but you know, 30 seconds can give you that valuable time.”
The app works by using a network of ground motion sensors, along with phone data.
If an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or higher is detected, users who have the app installed will receive audio and visual alerts commanding them to “fall, cover and hang on,” Goodale said.
The app also allows users to “get valuable information about how people felt the shaking and share information about earthquake damage,” according to CalOES.
MyShake is available on Apple and Google Play, as well as Chromebook and MacOS platforms.
Aside from downloading the MyShake app, Goodale said residents can prepare by preparing an earthquake kit.
“If there is a big earthquake, there are really two rules of thumb here,” Goodell said. “Maybe you can ask your local authorities to evacuate. But most likely, you will stay at home.”
For an earthquake bag, you’ll need to plan for at least 72 hours without emergency services and pack water and food. You will also need to stock your bag with any medications you or a family member may need.
“I personally have a daughter who has Type 1 diabetes, so she needs insulin,” Goodale said. “She needs her medication, so we put a certain amount of her medication aside in a bag.”
Phone chargers and personal information are also a good idea to put in your earthquake bag, Goodale said.
Other items to pack include cash and first aid kits, CalOES recommends.
Before the quake hits, Goodale said, “You also want to talk to your family to make a plan.”
“Earthquakes don’t really care about our schedules. They don’t have a schedule,” Goodale said. “It will happen at any moment. It could be Friday afternoon when you’re getting ready for the weekend. It could be in the middle of the night. It could be when you’re driving your car on your way to work. So, it’s important to know what to do.”
People should make sure they have a plan about what to do if they are separated from family and think about things like whether the children are at school or someone is in the office.
“Where will you meet if there is an earthquake?” Goodell said.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
