Toronto FC narrowly draws with San Jose Earthquakes

Toronto FC tied with the MLS-leading San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field.

Both teams scored in the first half, although the Reds appeared to take the lead in the 86th minute in dramatic fashion when TFC midfielder Daniel Saloi headed a rebound into an open goal. San Jose defender Daniel Mooney moved the ball away from the danger zone before the ball crossed the goal line.

The injury-hit Reds (3-3-5) sit sixth in the Eastern Conference, while San Jose (9-1-1) earned its first tie of the season.

The Reds opened the scoring two minutes into the game when Saloi fired a shot into the far corner from the left side of the penalty area after a good pass from Jonathan Osorio. This is the fourth goal of the Hungarian international team captain this season.

The Earthquakes responded in the 14th minute when Preston Good redirected Niko Tsakiris’ free kick into the net.

Osorio went down hard in the 36th minute after being fouled by San Jose defender Ronaldo Vieira, with one captain bringing down the other. But Osorio stayed in the match. Vieira received a yellow card for the foul.

TFC goalkeeper Luka Gavran had to make a fine save in first-half stoppage time to keep the game tied.

Midway through the second half, the Earthquakes appeared to get away with a handball in front of their goal. Two minutes later, San Jose scored a goal, but the referee ruled it out for offside.

The Reds have suffered injuries to some key players, including striker Josh Sargent (groin), midfielder Djordje Mihajlovic (pelvis), and defenders Richie Larrea (groin), Matthews Pereira (groin) and Nexoen Gomis (Achilles). Center back Walker Zimmerman returned to the lineup after missing last week’s match to be with his wife, who was about to give birth, although he did not participate in the match.

Forward Timo Werner, the Earthquakes’ third-leading scorer with four goals, did not make the trip to Toronto.
