How common are earthquakes in Michigan?

If you live in southeast Michigan, you may have felt something you weren’t expecting yesterday. If you thought it was an earthquake, you would be right. But how many times has Michigan experienced ground shaking?

Where did the monroe county earthquake happen?

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake shook Monroe County yesterday, May 4, 2026 at 5:32 p.m., according to MLive. Specifically, it occurred about 2 kilometers west of Carlton, Michigan, at a depth of 5.3 kilometers.

This earthquake occurred one week after an earthquake in Ontario and was felt by Michiganders throughout the Detroit metro area. This Canadian earthquake occurred on April 26 and was slightly stronger, with a magnitude of 2.9.

When it comes to severe weather events or natural disasters, Michigan is clearly a target for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and blizzards. In fact, we are still dealing with flood damage in Genesee County and central Michigan.

Why doesn’t Michigan experience major natural disasters?

But what about hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanoes? The nearest volcano is more than 1,000 miles away, and according to the National Weather Service, Michigan has never seen a storm that fits the true definition of a hurricane. Also, the state has never experienced a true tsunami, however, we did get what is called a meteorite tsunami.

You may be surprised that although rare, Michigan has reported more than 30 earthquakes whose epicenters were within state borders. Coldwater, Michigan was hit by its largest earthquake in 1947, which registered a magnitude of 4.6 on the WLNS scale.

So, while I wouldn’t rush out and buy volcano insurance today, the possibility of an earthquake here in the Great Lakes State is certainly possible.
