The dam is not threatened with cracking

Dear Editor:

Response: Rifting earthquakes raise doubts about whether Site C construction site is safe (Aug.21, Daily Courier opinion page):

BC Hydro’s top priority is the safety of the public and our employees, including the safe operation and maintenance of all our dams across the province.

Earthquakes caused by fracturing activities and injection wells are not large enough to threaten the stability of our Peace Zone dams, including the C site dam. The vast majority of these earthquakes are so small that they can only be detected by highly sensitive instruments.

There was no damage – cracking or otherwise – at the Site C dam site due to any of the earthquakes recorded in the area.

Even the 4.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred nearly two years ago about 20 kilometers from Site C, caused no damage to any of the structures or their foundations.

The Site C dam is designed and built in accordance with international and Canadian dam safety practices to withstand major events, including severe earthquakes and floods.

The project design takes into account the full range of possible earthquake magnitudes in the Peace Zone, and is built to withstand earthquakes of a magnitude much larger than anything recorded in the area.

We are building it to withstand earthquakes that are only expected to happen once every 10,000 years at that location.

Additionally, there is a five-kilometer buffer zone around our facilities where new permits for crushing and digging cannot be issued. BC Hydro will continue to work with the Oil and Gas Commission as well as Oil and Gas Operators to ensure our infrastructure remains secure.

Daily Mirror deliver to your home

Dear Editor:

Readers may have been forgiven last weekend for believing they were magically transported to England, and a copy of The Daily Mirror had been delivered to their doorstep.

Sure enough, your tabloid press drew attention to the extremely dangerous stance taken by the Kelowna City Council, the imprudent decision by the Kelowna City Council, (aside from the disputing Coun. Charlie Hodge vote) to reinstate the district, with the intent to divide 409 Park Ave. , Where until recently it was the Heritage- 1907 Groves House was registered.

It now graces the landfill, not a street in the heritage preservation area.

Unfortunately, while reading your article was “attractive,” it was based on the wrong information.

Your reporter was apparently falling asleep, stating that I, “took a personal aim” of Mr. David Cullen, Sr., Elderly Daddy of the applicant, by repeating his “statement” that they were looking for a “parcel” to purchase it. (This is the term for a developer, not people looking for a heritage home in a heritage preservation area.) Also, he “had some tearful arguments.”

However, in both cases I was referring to Mr. Dave Cullen Jr., as can be heard very clearly in the August 11th Public Hearing broadcast (kelowna.ca).

Yes, Mr. Cullen, Sr. cried during his presentation, but I wasn’t referring to that, but to the series of troubles that Dave Cullen Jr. has followed.

Under no circumstances would I add to Mr. David Cullen’s plight by drawing attention to it.

If anything, I would feel sorry for him, as I felt he was “used” to reinforce his son’s argument, that he, Dave Cullen, was sincerely intending to restore the heritage home, not destroy it.

(He had been discredited by his additional remark at the hearing that for nearly five years, they had been searching for “construction” in the area).

I sincerely hope that this misinformation clears up and corrects it. Not many newspapers will sell like the “mirror” version, but I hope you will exclude my fellow readers from the idea that I verbally offend elderly gentlemen.

Maybe hit them with a stick when the press isn’t around?

Yours faithfully to preserve the heritage,

Valerie Halford, Kelowna

The purpose of selling the land remains today

Dear Editor:

I note with interest that Graham Hood, Kelowna City Hall’s Strategic Development Officer, was quick to point out that the old RCMP site is not inside, as he calls it, the “Sawmill Trust Lands,” known to most of them as Simpson Lands, and is not bound by Restricted Land Use Guidelines.

What Mr. Hood fails to mention is that “the location of the Kelowna Civic Auditorium … was given to the city by the Simpsons at a nominal price.”

All the land between Doyle and Smith was sawn Kelowna lands, and were sold at various times for a “token price” when used for civilian purposes.

There is a photo in the Kelowna Courier dated 2/5/62 of my father, Horace Simpson, “cutting the first grass” of what will become Kelowna Community Theater. He is flanked by Mayor Dick Parkinson, Aldermin Winters and Treadgold, along with a younger Walter Gray.

Dave Chapman who led a community campaign to build this theater is also in this photo.

The price of RCMP lands is likely to be negligible, and although Mr. Hood claims that there is widespread public consultation for its future use, I have yet to meet anyone who would agree.

The Rise Developments deal is a shocking abdication of responsibility by our civilian leaders, especially given the context of the pressing needs of many in our community for a performance facility that will enhance, revitalize and support the arts and the wider community.

City Hall would serve their community better if they paid attention to how the property around their office – whether covered by Simpson’s charter or not – got into their possession.

Sharon J Simpson, Kelowna

God tired of our lack of responsibility

Dear Editor:

Etc. etc. etc. Same age, same age will not fit everything.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, gasbags politics and the daily news can iterate and iterate the same methods to stave off the Coronavirus until the cows return home, regardless of who is chosen.

Do you not understand the disguised marvels? If not, please read on.

Not all people on planet Earth have united for the greater good of humankind.

People worshiped different deities for different reasons, perhaps before the Stone Age. Man and money are not a cure or a fix for everyone. Strangely, I haven’t heard the words yet, “We will investigate until this happens again.” So why not apply the same dream thoughts to present and future unknown invaders who are still unknown at this time?

Think carefully when reading or watching daily news that features frequent torment and gloom.

Maybe you can admit that trying to influence everyone to dance or wear a mask is humanly impossible.

So try, if you like, to cry if you want to, but the unknown has always been barking at the door of man with a surprise package full of the good, the bad and the ugly.

The unknown present is totally ugly, so wear a mask, hide your fear and face reality, because many anonymous remedies that hurt people are all over the planet 24/7 and are probably here to stay.

How could any god allow all this misery?

The answer is clear to me. God was tired and tired of the proper care that humanity failed to take when he trusted it to administer his creation to Mother Earth.

Criticism is not a way to win the battle of COVID

Dear Editor:

Canadians can be proud of our efforts to manage COVID-19. Congratulations.

Unfortunately, however, there comes a point when constant negative criticism turns many off.

Especially when they are responsible in their own way. This way every Canadian is praised.

Our large number of survivors, 30,000 ventilators are in use, vaccine development, success after success is wonders.

Most of us wear masks and walk away most of the time. Congratulations, well done.

Now, a new, welcoming compliance approach can put an end to COVID-19 and help us get back to work.

Harper No. 1 in Parliament

Dear Editor:

Conservative Representative Dan Albas’ weekly talk was about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his powers in Parliament.

Albus must have forgotten Stephen Harper did the same thing four times in six years.

Harper indicated that the first session of the 39th Parliament would be postponed on September 15, 2007, and that the second session would be summoned with a speech from the throne on October 16, 2007.

Harper franchise II

(December 5, 2008 – January 26, 2009) and the third (December 31, 2009 – March 3, 2010) proved more controversial because they gave the government a tactical advantage over the opposition by postponing the vote of confidence. . And a parliamentary investigation into the file of Afghan detainees.

This was the prime minister Albus supported in every decision throughout those years. It’s funny how his memory is so exhausted.

I am not defending Trudeau and his recently named position either. Anyone with some common sense would have asked other parties to consider the WE plan, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.

I find it funny that a one-dimensional party hasn’t really had a leader in months because they have shot their current party for incompetence and corruption and is in the midst of a race for leadership, seeing it appropriate to constantly point fingers at the government trying to combat the pandemic and its financial problems to preserve Canadians health, without a single ounce of help from the Conservatives.

We are a scandal creating smell in the capital

Dear Editor:

Now we have the WE scandal, with former Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on their knees in pig manure. No one will emerge from this mess smelling of roses.

The whole mess is still in the dark and it seems that the whole truth has not been revealed.

Who were all involved and who received the money?

When times get very hot in Parliament, Trudeau and Morno don’t want to be there – one doesn’t show up and the other runs away. This should tell the audience that something is wrong. Trudeau on his third dangerous mistake. He did not learn from the first two mistakes. Then, the two leave a woman in an effort to clean up the mess – Chrystia Freeland to the rescue.

She will have to get rid of the clutter and bring out the stench so Trudeau can come home at a later time, hoping that the Canadians have forgotten his mistakes or forgive her and let him continue to work with this disregard for Canadian taxpayers.

Trudeau even suggests Parliament to give him a chance to broadcast before he faces the house again.

Why would someone of Morno’s fortune go to Parliament and falter with the likes of Trudeau and thus tarnish his reputation in pig dung?

How will Canadians really learn about charities like WE and who checks them out to keep them on the right path?

Every time a charity exists, taxes are deferred, so Ottawa has to tax other Canadians to compensate for non-payment of taxes by the charities. Churches are included in this as well.

Do Canadians sleep better knowing these charities are tax-deductible and provide services with politicians? Not all charities are in the same pig pattern as WE. Meanwhile, pig droppings pass through the streets of Ottawa. I feel sorry that Freeland had to clean it up.

Jurgen Hansen, Kelowna

Trudeau’s fake feminism is letting him down again

Dear Editor:

Due to the recent humiliation of the liberal government, the ongoing WE issue, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau threw Bill Morneau, the former finance minister, under the bus.

When the going gets tough, Trudeau relies on Chrystia Freeland, newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, to bail him out. If Trudeau was a true feminist, he would publicly announce that Freeland would make a better Prime Minister and step aside until she became a leader.

But Trudeau did show, during the Judy Wilson-Raybould / SNC-Lavalin case, that he is an immoral, fake feminist.
