Vladimir Putin has used his annual Victory Day speech in Moscow, citing the Soviet Union’s defeat in World War II against Nazi Germany, to justify the war in Ukraine and denounce NATO. He was speaking as he oversaw a small parade in Red Square, which took place under heavy security amid fears of an attack in Ukraine and growing concerns over war in Russia. For the first time in years, no armored vehicles or ballistic missiles appeared in Moscow’s Victory Day parade. Instead, they were shown large television screens. The Russian president has said that he is fighting a “just” war and that Ukraine is an “aggressive force” that is being “armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc.” His remarks come amid muted celebrations across Russia to mark the nation’s biggest national holiday.
