MOVEMENT The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) and the rupee exchange rate during April-May 2026 have once again raised concerns over domestic economic resilience. The JCI corrected quite deeply, while the Rupiah moved around IDR 17,000 per US dollar amid global pressure and growing uncertainty over international capital flows.
However, the most important question is not whether the market is weakening. The market always moves in cycles of ups and downs.
A more fundamental question is: why is it that every time global pressure increases, the Indonesian economy seems vulnerable again?
At this point, we need to stop viewing market volatility as just a short-term technical phenomenon. The volatility of the JCI and the Rupiah should be interpreted as a reflection of the national economic structure which still faces fundamental problems: dependence on short-term capital flows, weakness of the high value-added industrial base and shallow domestic financial markets.
