A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at 12:57 PM on Tuesday, May 19. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 41 kilometers south of the city of Ica, in the region of the same name, according to the National Seismological Center of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

The depth of the earthquake reached 81 km. The strength of VI was felt in Ika, according to the official report of the IGP.

The earthquake was also felt by residents of several areas in the capital, Lima, and other areas along the central coast of Peru.

Lima witnessed seismic silence for 280 years and is not free from the risk of a major earthquake.

Along the central coast of Peru, the Nazca and South American tectonic plates periodically collide, generating high seismic activity, noted Hernando Tavera, President of the IGP.

“The frequency of earthquakes allowed us to conduct research and come to the conclusion that there is a possibility that an earthquake of magnitude will occur at some point off the coast of Lima. For this reason, during the exercises we simulated earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale,” he told the Andina news agency.

Tavera pointed out that the largest earthquake recorded along the central coast of Peru occurred in 1746, with a magnitude ranging between 8.8 and 9.0. He added that no other earthquake of this magnitude had struck the region since then.

Therefore, there are 280 years of accumulated energy that will only be released in an earthquake exceeding a magnitude of 8.0.
