The mayor of a southern California city has resigned after being accused by the US Department of Justice of acting as an illegal agent for China. Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, 58, agreed to plead guilty to the crime and said the Arcadia City Council resigned from her position last Monday. Wang faces up to 10 years in prison. His lawyers, Jason Liang and Brian Sun, said on his behalf that he “apologizes and regrets the mistakes he made in his personal life.” US officials say the extent of China’s covert activity and espionage in the United States goes beyond this case.
