Travel warning for Venezuela has been updated following a 7.5-magnitude earthquake

Officials have warned Americans to reconsider travel to Venezuela, saying the South American country presents new risks to tourists.
The country is at Level 3 of a “Reconsider Travel” warning, according to an update issued by the US State Department on June 27.
While Venezuela has been at Level 3 all year, the latest warnings add the country’s recent earthquakes as a major factor for travelers.

The country was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, followed by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake on June 24.
The warning stated: “Venezuela experienced a strong tremor and earthquake in quick succession.”

He added: “This caused severe damage and disruption to transportation, infrastructure and emergency services.”

Overall, officials warn of “crime, kidnapping, terrorism and poor health infrastructure” in the country.
“Violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery and kidnapping do occur,” the warning said.

“Irregular armed groups can carry out acts of violence against citizens without warning. There are no reliable statistics on crimes.”

Many areas in Venezuela are also under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning.
This includes the border area between Venezuela and Colombia, Amazonas State, Apure State, and Aragua State outside Maracay, as well as Guarico State, Tachira State, and rural areas in Bolivar State.

While Venezuela is not considered a major tourist destination, some Americans still travel there to visit family or explore attractions such as Angel Falls and Los Roques National Park in the Venezuelan Caribbean.

This advice comes amid a complicated relationship between the United States and Venezuela, with Washington providing disaster relief months after Maduro’s arrest.

After 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck the northern part of the South American country last week, the US government stepped in to help in a move the administration says was welcomed by the Venezuelan government.

“We have seen full compliance from the interim authorities in Venezuela as a result of the unprecedented response by the United States to these deadly earthquakes,” a State Department official previously told Fox News Digital.
