Driven into action after earthquakes

It’s hard for Miguel “Mish” Montero to look at the images of a damaged Venezuela.

“It’s really frustrating,” Montero said. “But at the same time, I feel proud when I know people are organizing, helping, and getting out there.”

Montero grew up in Caracas and moved to the United States to attend college.

“It’s a close-knit community,” Montero said. “Everybody’s so happy. Everybody, like, just wants to, you know, have a good time, work hard.”

When the earthquakes struck, he reached out to friends and family, saying they were all safe. Then Montero said he looked for a way to help.

“It came to mind by looking at my friends’ accounts on Instagram and on social media, where they’re posting like, ‘Oh, we’re buying supplies and taking them to people who need them,’” Montero said.

Then he started working himself, with the software engineer compiling details for people in Venezuela; Purchase and send supplies to affected areas. Montero said he vetted all the people and organizations.

“We realize that people do not want to send money to entities that are not officially registered,” said Patricia Diaz, a Nexus volunteer in Venezuela. “So, having a presence on web pages like this gives us more credibility.”

Diaz and her friends in Venezuela started Nexos in the days after the earthquake. They have been bringing supplies to the affected area ever since, thanks in part to the help they received through VenHelp.

“We raised a total of, I think in six days, about 30,000, and being on VenHelp definitely helped,” Diaz said.

“I wish I was there to help,” Montero said. “But this is kind of like, my way of helping that I can do from here.”

For finding a way to help Venezuelans in need from a world away, Miguel “Mish” Montero received the New York City of the Week award.
