Locals in Kalgoorlie wake up to their homes shaking when a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hits the regional town

Residents of Kalgoorlie woke up on Friday morning to a 3.4 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 5 kilometers.

Residents of Goldfields reported their entire homes were shaken by the natural event, which according to the Geoscience Australia website occurred at 5.34am.

“It shook my whole house and woke me up,” one local resident said on Facebook, while another said the quake did not shake “everything at all,” but rather caused paintings to fall from the walls.

Another said: “Oh my god, the whole house shook sideways.”

The earthquake was located slightly northwest of the city center, but it seemed that people in the suburbs felt it.

“It felt like it was underneath our house in Lamington,” one person said.

Another person claimed that the vibration caused the “creepy TV” to turn on itself.

Kalgoorlie Mayor Glen Wilson said the biggest damage recorded was disruption to his wake-up time.

He told 6PR that the quake woke him up about half an hour before his alarm, which he described as “very disturbing.”

One person’s home changed dramatically, they wrote.

“I moved our house about a metre, and it was the strongest feeling I’ve felt so far in the last few years,” one resident said on Facebook.

Another said: “I thought the whole roof was going to fall in.”

About 350 people reported feeling the quake, and people in Boulder also said they felt it.

One wrote: “Oh, that was scary.”

It was so significant that someone thought “the whole roof is going to fall off.”

Another person said: “It was a very good jolt! I haven’t had a good wake up like this in a while! Everything shook in this house.”

Another said: “That was a huge explosion.” Another said: “My windows and my bed shook too.”

Although the event was widely felt, it was far from the largest earthquake in Kalgoorlie.

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in 2010, causing severe damage to historic buildings and sending two people to hospital.

While locals have become somewhat accustomed to movement in the ground due to routine mining explosions, earthquakes are not uncommon in the area either.

The regional city experiences a number of earthquakes each year but usually their magnitude is less than four, which is large enough to be felt but does not usually cause structural damage.

Earthquakes of between one and two magnitudes occur every few weeks, but the last more significant earthquake felt by the city’s residents was on January 12 when a 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck.
