WEATHER HIT: Sunshine won’t last long before rain arrives on Friday

Get ready to hit the weather! There will be plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures on Thursday before a big weather change on Friday.

The wet low that dropped rain across Western Washington on Monday returns for more. The system will rebound to the northeast from central California to eastern Washington, and will deal another blow to the region on Thursday and Friday nights. It will merge with a weak system in the Pacific Ocean tracking southeast from the Gulf of Alaska.

The double whammy of the weather system will bring some rain and cooler temperatures on Friday. High temperatures on Thursday across the interior of Western Washington are expected to reach the 70s, with many warmer areas like the South Sound toward Portland and the Cascade foothills reaching 80 degrees or better.

But on Friday, high temperatures will drop to nearly 20 degrees from Thursday’s warmth, with difficulties reaching 60 degrees. The rain will tend to be scattered, although there will be a risk of a thunderstorm toward the Cascades Thursday night into Friday morning. The increase in low-level overland flow from the Pacific Ocean will also maintain significant cloud cover with cooler air.

Weather forecast for the weekend in Western Washington

All is not lost over the weekend. This pair of weather systems is expected to track inland. In addition, low-level overland flow is expected to gradually decline. Saturday is expected to have morning clouds with some afternoon clarity, with temperatures in the low to mid 60s.

By Sunday, morning clouds are expected to be short-lived, revealing more sunshine in the afternoon. Highs on Sunday will continue to rebound, reaching the mid and upper 60s, even 70 degrees in typically warmer areas. The average high temperature during the last weekend of May is in the upper 60s.

Early next week, high pressure is expected to build over Western Washington for more sunshine and continued warming as temperatures rise into the 70s, just in time for the first sunset at 9pm on June 2.
