The BBC’s Middle East correspondent Yolande Knell tells us what Israel’s next move could be in Gaza, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the Israel Defense Forces to increase its control of the territory to 70 percent. Mr Netanyahu said Israel was “squeezing Hamas”, with the IDF advancing beyond the “yellow line” set by last year’s US-brokered ceasefire agreement. Analysts say the operation is pushing Palestinian civilians into an ever-smaller patch of land. This comes just days after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz spoke of plans to “voluntarily emigrate” large numbers of Palestinians from Gaza. Human rights groups have warned that this could lead to the forced displacement of civilians – which could be considered a war crime. Some right-wing voices in Israel have called for the establishment of Jewish settlements in Gaza, as they have done in the occupied West Bank. According to the 20-point plan presented by US President Donald Trump, the next phase of the Gaza peace plan will include the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, but indirect talks have stalled because Hamas refuses to lay down its weapons.
