A pair of minor earthquakes were reported upstate

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – Instruments recorded two minor earthquakes upstate on Friday.

According to the USGS, a 1.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded shortly after 5 p.m. Friday about 8 kilometers east of Cross Anchor, in the Cross Keys area near SC Highway 49.

The devices detected the earthquake at a depth of 6.8 kilometers.

Less than half an hour later, the devices recorded a second earthquake in the same area, with a magnitude of 1.9 and a depth of 1.6 kilometers.

The earthquakes are among the smallest ever recorded by the USGS. Such events are generally not felt by anyone nearby, but can be detected using seismic instruments. The US Geological Survey records millions of similar earthquakes around the world every year.
