US West Coast Scientists Warn of Earthquake: An updated report from the US Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that the probability of a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone has risen to 15% within the next 50 years.

The study, which uses advanced mathematical modeling and ancient seismic records, includes for the first time the time elapsed since the last major seismic event in the region. The 1,000-kilometre (621-mile) fault line poses a direct threat to major urban centers — including Seattle, Portland and Vancouver — home to more than 10 million people.

The last major rupture occurred on the night of January 26, 1700. Scientists were able to accurately date this event by analyzing historical records from across the Pacific Ocean. Japanese records kept by samurai and traders contain details of the “orphan tsunami”, a series of devastating waves that struck the Japanese coast without an accompanying local earthquake.

Scientists on the West Coast of the United States warn of an earthquake

The danger stems from the ongoing subduction process in which the Juan de Fuca plate slides beneath the North American plate, leading to a buildup of enormous tectonic pressure.

The researchers warn that the eventual release of this energy will lead to intense ground shaking, coastal tsunamis, landslides, and soil liquefaction – a phenomenon in which saturated soil loses its structural integrity during shaking, causing it to behave like a liquid and causing buildings to collapse.

A team of oceanographers from the University of Washington, led by Brendan Phillip, recently discovered an underwater spring called Pythia Oasis right along the plate boundary, about 80 kilometers off the coast of Oregon. The researchers observed that almost fresh water flows under high pressure from the deep oceanic crust, with temperatures up to 9 degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding seawater.

This thermal anomaly confirms that the water originates from the rift zone about 4 kilometers below the sea floor, where temperatures exceed 150 degrees Celsius. “It’s something I’ve never seen before and, to my knowledge, never been observed before,” noted marine geologist and co-author Evan Solomon.

The release of these fluids disrupts the balance of the crack by depleting the system’s natural lubricants. Specialists explain that this loss of pressurized fluid increases friction between tectonic plates, which increases the risk of violent rupture in the currently closed parts.

Risk of partial tears

The USGS report notes that the Cascadia subduction zone exhibits cyclic behavior, with at least 19 major earthquakes over the past 10,000 years. Even if a widespread 9-magnitude rupture does not occur, the report warns of high-risk scenarios involving partial ruptures. Mathematical projections indicate that in the southern part of the fault, the probability of an earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater rising to 30% within the next 50 years.

State authorities in Oregon and Washington are using these results to update vulnerability assessments in dense urban areas. Although infrastructure strengthening is underway, regional preparedness remains uneven. Unlike Vancouver, which has implemented strict seismic rules for decades, Seattle and Portland still contain thousands of unreinforced buildings that are at risk of collapsing.

Limitations in forecasting and emergency planning

Academic institutions assert that with current technology, it remains impossible to predict the exact date or time of a seismic event. The Columbia Climate School reiterated that “predicting earthquakes is not possible,” noting that underwater monitoring tools are primarily used to inform emergency and risk mitigation protocols.

Affected states are coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to improve tsunami early warning systems and evacuation routes. Current adaptation efforts prioritize structural modification of schools and health care facilities located within expected flood areas.
