NorCal earthquakes: Magnitude 5.1, 5.7 quakes felt near Eureka, Crescent City, California-Oregon border: USGS

EUREKA, Calif. (KGO) — Two earthquakes with a preliminary magnitude of more than 5.0 struck off the coast of Northern California on Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to the USGS, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Crescent City near the Oregon-California border at 3:53 a.m.

Then a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Eureka at 5:45 a.m. and there was a magnitude 4.5 aftershock at 6:11 a.m.

The magnitude 5.7 quake was measured at a depth of 10 km and the magnitude 5.1 quake was measured at a depth of 0.2 km. There is a greater potential for shaking and damage the closer an earthquake is to the surface.

There was no warning or threat of a tsunami from these earthquakes.

No injuries or major damage were reported.
