Residents throughout the Las Vegas Valley felt shaking Thursday afternoon after an earthquake struck near Summerlin, prompting thousands of reports to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred just before 2 p.m. on June 4, with its epicenter located about 7 miles northwest of South Summerlin. Initial measurements put the quake’s magnitude between 3.8 and 4.1, making it strong enough to be felt widely throughout Southern Nevada.

A video clip circulated on social media captured the moment the tremors were felt, with residents reporting tremors in Summerlin, Henderson and other parts of the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

Hundreds reported feeling shaken

Within minutes of the quake, more than 1,000 reports were submitted to the USGS from across the region. Most descriptions of the vibration of light correspond to level 4 on the modified Mercalli intensity scale.

According to the USGS, this level of vibration is typically felt by many people indoors and may cause windows, plates and doors to shake while parked vehicles shake slightly.

Reports also came from communities outside Las Vegas, including Pahrump near the Nevada-California border.

No immediate damage was reported

The authorities did not receive any immediate reports of injuries or serious damage following the earthquake. The quake originated near Summerlin South, a residential area located along the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley near Red Rock Canyon.

Seismologists noted that size estimates could be adjusted as additional data from monitoring stations continues to be analyzed.

The chances of aftershocks are still high

Following the earthquake, USGS forecast models indicated a moderate chance of additional seismic activity in the area.

Scientists estimated a roughly 26% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 3.0 or higher occurring within the next 24 hours. The probability of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or greater was estimated at about 5%, while the probability of an aftershock of magnitude 5.0 remaining less than 1%.

The agency also estimated the probability of a larger earthquake occurring in the same period at approximately 4%.

Nevada remains one of the most active seismic regions in America

Although earthquakes are less commonly associated with Nevada than its neighbor California, the state is among the most seismically active in the country.

Nevada lies within the Basin and Range Province, where the Earth’s crust is gradually expanding. This geological process has created numerous fault systems capable of generating frequent earthquakes throughout the state.

Unlike California, where seismic activity is concentrated along major fault lines such as the San Andreas Fault, Nevada earthquakes occur across a vast network of faults distributed throughout the region.

The West Coast experiences multiple earthquakes

The Las Vegas earthquake was one of several seismic events recorded across the western United States on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, a series of moderate offshore earthquakes struck near Mendocino Triple Junction, a highly active tectonic area off Northern California where three tectonic plates meet.

Among the strongest events was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred approximately 120 miles offshore from McKinleyville, California. A separate 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred west of Petrolia in Humboldt County, followed shortly after by a 4.5-magnitude aftershock in roughly the same area.

Another large earthquake was recorded west-southwest of Pistol River, Oregon, shortly before 4 a.m. PT.

Despite the series of offshore earthquakes, officials reported there was no threat of a tsunami or serious damage.

What should you do during an earthquake?

According to USGS guidance, people indoors should stay put, stop immediately, cover and hold on. Experts recommend taking cover under a sturdy table or moving along an interior wall away from windows, heavy furniture, heaters and appliances.

The agency advises against running outside or using stairs while the ground is shaking, as doing so increases the risk of injury from falling debris or broken glass.

People outdoors should move to an open area away from buildings, utility poles, power lines and other structures that may collapse.
