A 3.8 magnitude earthquake hits the Las Vegas Valley Local las vegas

An earthquake centered near Red Rock Canyon rocked the Las Vegas Valley early Thursday afternoon, causing no damage but serving as a reminder of Nevada’s status as a hotspot for seismic activity.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reported that the quake occurred about 14 miles west of Las Vegas at 1:47 p.m. and at a depth of 4.3 miles below the surface. The status of the report was described as preliminary.

“Our estimate is 4.1, and the epicenter was in Red Rock Canyon,” Christy Rowe, the lab’s director, said shortly after the quake struck. “Our analysts are tracking it now. It appears to be widely felt.”

There were no immediate reports of damage to buildings or infrastructure, according to Clark County Fire Chief Deputy Chief Kenny Holding. For a 4.1 magnitude earthquake, reports of damage are rare, Rowe said.

The earthquake’s magnitude was later revised to 3.8 by the US Geological Survey.

“It reminds us that Nevada is earthquake country,” Rowe said. “We always have to be ready for something bigger.”

Rowe said preliminary information indicates the quake was not linked to any known major fault lines in southern Nevada. She said it appeared the quake was “most likely caused by a strike-slip fault,” or a fault that moves from one side to the other.

“It appears people around Las Vegas and in Pahrump are reporting weak to light shaking,” Rowe said. “Your lights may swing, but nothing falls off the shelves.”

“Did you feel it?” The USGS online survey produced more than 3,000 reports of mild shaking and no damage reported in the Las Vegas Valley and in Nye County.

Many followers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal on social media reported hearing a loud noise outside when the quake shook their buildings. More than 100 people posted information about the earthquake on social media within minutes after it occurred.

Earthquake history

Nevada’s history is full of earthquakes. The largest earthquake in the state’s recorded history occurred in 1915, a 7.3 magnitude quake that occurred about 50 miles south of Winnemucca. The 6.5 magnitude Monte Cristo earthquake struck near Tonopah in May 2020.

Since 1915, eight of Nevada’s largest earthquakes have registered magnitudes of 6 or greater. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Ridgecrest, California, and Las Vegas in July 2019.
