5.6 magnitude Bhutan earthquake causes tremors in Sikkim and North Bengal

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Bhutan late Sunday night (June 7), triggering tremors across Sikkim and several districts in north Bengal, PTI quoted officials as saying.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 11:06 pm near Punakha, Bhutan. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The tremors continued for a few seconds and were felt in parts of northeastern India, prompting residents to leave their homes as a precaution.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of loss of life, injuries or property damage in Sikkim or West Bengal.

Officials continued to monitor the situation after the earthquake.

A Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority official said the situation was being closely monitored, although no adverse incidents had been reported.

Residents rush outside after feeling the tremors

Residents of Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim reported feeling the shaking shortly after 11 pm.

Many people left their homes and buildings temporarily after feeling the tremors.

Residents said, “We felt the earthquake for a few seconds,” and described the tremor as short but noticeable.

Tremors were felt across North Bengal

The earthquake was also felt in several areas in North Bengal bordering Bhutan.

Residents of Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar said they experienced tremors and came out of their homes as a precaution.

Local officials confirmed that no injuries or property damage were reported in these areas.

An earthquake struck near Punakha

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was located near Punakha, one of the main administrative regions of Bhutan.

GFZ said the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which could make the tremors more noticeable over a wider area.

The authorities in Bhutan did not immediately report any serious damage following the earthquake.

The situation is under surveillance

Disaster management and local authorities in the affected areas said they were monitoring developments and assessing whether there would be aftershocks.

No major disturbances or emergency incidents related to the earthquake were reported in Sikkim or North Bengal.
