A 7.8 magnitude earthquake strikes the southern Philippines. Tsunami warnings were issued

MANILA (Reuters) – Tsunami warnings were issued after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, the German Research Center for Geosciences said.

GFZ said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Geophysical agencies in the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia issued tsunami warnings. There were no immediate reports of serious damage in either country.

GFZ had earlier pegged the earthquake’s magnitude at 8.2. The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat for the earthquake.

The Philippine Phivolcs Agency said that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 7.0 and warned of damage and tsunami waves more than one meter high, which may last for several hours.

Indonesia’s BMKG agency said the earthquake’s magnitude reached 7.7.

Benji Ancheta, police chief of the town of Alabil in Sarangani, Philippines, said that the police building suffered some cracks immediately after the earthquake that occurred during the flag-raising ceremony.

Ancheta said there were no immediate reports of casualties, but some people fainted following the strong earthquake.

“This is the strongest earthquake we have ever seen,” Ancheta told Reuters by phone.

Eyewitnesses in the city of Manado in northern Indonesia said that the earthquake was very strong.

The Philippines and Indonesia are a tectonically complex part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active belt that extends from South America to the Russian Far East.
