A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore the southern Philippines early Monday, damaging buildings and a major access bridge in a large southern city and triggering a 1-meter tsunami that washed ashore on nearby coasts. China’s official Xinhua News Agency quoted the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as saying that at least eight people died after the earthquake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a bulletin that the quake was recorded at 7:37 a.m. at a depth of 33 kilometers and was located 32 kilometers south and four degrees west of Maasim in Sarangani, Phil Star reported.

In an advisory, Phivolcs said “waves are expected to be more than one meter above normal tidal levels and may be higher in closed bays and straits,” Philippine media ABS-CBN reported.

Phivolcs said the first tsunami waves could arrive between 07:37 a.m. and 09:37 a.m. and could last for hours.

It urged residents in coastal areas in the following provinces to immediately evacuate to higher ground or move inland.

Eight people were reported dead after the quake, according to the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. The office said the deaths were being verified. Local media also reported that more than 200 people were injured.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that classes have been suspended at all levels in the earthquake-affected areas of Mindanao. He also directed government agencies to “act immediately” in disaster response and relief operations, according to Phil Starr.

Master Sgt. Robert Dagon of the General Santos City Police told AFP that “a number of buildings collapsed,” including homes, while the authorities carried out rescue operations.

The Philippine Civil Aviation Authority has temporarily suspended operations at General Santos City Airport following the earthquake and tsunami warning issued by Phivolcs, according to Phil Star.

An employee of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines told the Global Times on Monday that the embassy has not received any reports of Chinese nationals being injured or killed in the earthquake, adding that relevant information will be disseminated through its official channels.

A Chinese national named Xu, who currently resides in the north-central coast of Mindanao, told the Global Times: “An earthquake alert suddenly appeared on my phone. I received the warning before I felt the earthquake… The shaking was fairly strong for about a minute, and I was immediately evacuated to the basement. I’m safe now.”

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Mindanao, Philippines (5.55°N, 125.10°E) at 7:37 a.m. Beijing time on Monday. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 40 km.

Based on preliminary parameters of the quake, the center said the quake could generate a regional tsunami several hundred kilometers away from the epicenter, but it is not expected to have a devastating impact on China’s coast.

The Tsunami Warning Center said it will continue to monitor and analyze earthquake and tsunami data and will issue updates in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, a tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas stretching from Ibaraki Prefecture to Okinawa Prefecture on Monday after a major earthquake struck near the Philippines, according to the Japan Times.

The Chinese Consulate General in Fukuoka, Japan, on Monday reminded Chinese citizens in Japan’s outlying islands and coastal areas to closely monitor tsunami warnings and disaster prevention updates after the Japan Meteorological Administration said a strong earthquake near Mindanao, Philippines, will trigger tsunami waves starting at 11:00 a.m. Monday, which will respectively hit Miyako Island, the main island of Okinawa, the Amami Islands and the eastern coasts of Miyazaki. And Kagoshima. Governorates, its height is estimated at about 1 meter.

The Consulate General reminded Chinese citizens to immediately move away from seashores, ports and estuaries, move to higher ground, and fully prepare for disasters and make emergency evacuation arrangements, in order to give priority to personal safety.

Separately, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for waves of up to 3 meters in height in the Philippines and up to 1 meter in Malaysia, according to the Japan Times.

Indonesia also issued an immediate evacuation order for parts of North Sulawesi, North Gorontalo Province and the Sanghei Islands, with residents urged to move to higher ground, according to Al Jazeera.
