A strong earthquake was felt off Cuba by residents of South Florida, prompting evacuations and disrupting transit

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake off the northwest coast of Cuba led to reports of mild tremors in parts of Florida Monday afternoon, including South Florida.

According to the USGS, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred about 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, located west of Havana. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 376 miles from Miami.

“Florida felt the shaking from the recent M6.1 earthquake off the coast of Cuba, where earthquakes are not commonly felt. Did you feel it? (If you were in the area and didn’t feel it, that’s data too!),” the USGS posted on X.

After the earthquake, Floridians from Tampa and Orlando all the way to South Florida reported feeling shaking from the quake.

“The City of Miami is aware of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Cuba,” the city said in a statement. “The resulting seismic activity was reportedly felt in several areas throughout the city, resulting in multiple calls for service.”

Miami Fire Rescue responded to every reported incident, city officials said.

“At this time, no major injuries or major property damage have been reported, and all calls have been handled without further issue.”

The earthquake also temporarily disrupted transit service in downtown Miami. Miami-Dade County officials said Metrorail and Metromover service were suspended after the Stephen B. Clark Center was evacuated due to reports of the building shaking. Both services have since been resumed.

The tremor was also felt in South Dadeland, where at least one building was evacuated after tremors were reported inside. People who live, work and go to school in the area told CBS News Miami they felt the roaring beneath their feet shortly before 2:30 p.m.

“We feel like we’re shaking and we’re like, ‘Oh, what is this?'” “We just heard an alarm telling everyone to evacuate the building,” Maria Torrado told CBS News Miami.

Torrado said there was a large police and firefighter presence at the scene during the evacuation, and that residents remained outside for about 45 minutes before they were allowed back into the building.

Moments after the quake struck, the National Weather Service office in Miami posted an update saying there was no tsunami threat in South Florida.

The quake shook buildings across western Cuba and alarmed residents, though no injuries or damage were immediately reported, according to the Associated Press.

Flavia Popo, a hotel manager in Pinar del Rio, told the Associated Press that the shaking shook the building and panicked people in the area.

“Everyone here is fine,” she said over the phone. “People on the street are a little scared.”

Cuba is no stranger to seismic activity, with the island’s eastern rift zone causing devastating earthquakes in recent centuries, including a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in January 2020 that caused damage in Cuba and the Cayman Islands.

Has Florida felt shaking from earthquakes before?

Although rare, shaking from strong earthquakes in the area has previously been felt in Florida, including Miami.

In January 2020, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Cuba and northwest Jamaica, with shaking felt in Miami and other parts of South Florida.
