An earthquake near Cuba shakes Lee County homes and offices

Lee County, Florida —

Tremors from an earthquake near Cuba on Monday were felt throughout homes, offices and roads in Southwest Florida, including North Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

“Oh, we’re having an earthquake. And they all thought I was crazy,” said North Fort Myers resident Anne Rockford.

Rockford described the experience from her office in Fort Myers: “The computers were vibrating, like computer screens. You could definitely feel it vibrating through your chair.”

The rumble was felt throughout the Gulf Coast, from offices to homes. “I was looking at the TV and the whole house was like this. And I looked at my grandfather’s clock and it was doing this,” said Patricia Gillen, another North Fort Myers resident.

Residents of Lake Arrowhead in north Fort Myers, near North U.S. 41, reported furniture shaking inside their homes.

“I’d have to say it was five straight seconds after I heard the rumbling sound. It felt like an hour,” Guillen said. “I’m getting goosebumps right now. It’s crazy.”

Drivers on the road also noticed tremors. “The car was shaking like we had strong winds of 40 miles an hour, maybe 35 miles,” said Pamela Hetrick of Alpha, Florida. “And you’re sitting there, and it’s going back and forth. I looked at all the trees and stuff, and there was no wind.”

Many residents were initially unsure what was happening, but were in awe when they felt the rare earthquake hit Florida.

“You hope they’re all okay. This isn’t something stronger than we thought, because you always get aftershocks sometimes.” Hetrick said. “You just hope and pray it doesn’t happen again.”

Lee County government officials confirmed, after immediate inspections, that there was no damage or disruption to county buildings or operations.
