Florida is shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Cuba Florida

The earthquake that occurred on Monday off the coast of Cuba was felt in Florida and parts of Mexico, the strongest earthquake the region has seen in nearly 150 years.

The 6.1 magnitude quake struck in the afternoon, about 65 miles (105 kilometers) northwest of Mantua, Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The US Geological Survey added that the quake was at a depth of 16 miles.

No injuries, deaths or major property damage were reported. However, Floridians reported tremors in an area not accustomed to earthquakes.

“It was very strong and honestly it was kind of scary,” Tampa Bay resident Brittney Jeffries told local news station WFLA.

“I wasn’t really worried, in the sense that I thought the earthquake was here because we don’t get earthquakes here. But at the same time, I was worried because we don’t get earthquakes here.”

Likewise, Barbara German, a resident of Ruskin, Florida, told local news channel WTVT that she was upstairs in her home working when she felt the tremors. “It was worrying at first because I didn’t really know what it was,” she said.

Despite the impact, the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said Monday that there was “no tsunami risk” for the east and south coasts of the United States or the east coast of Canada.

The center added: “Based on earthquake information and historical tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami.”

Speaking to Reuters, Paul Earle, a seismologist with the US Geological Survey, noted that the last earthquake of the same size to occur within 200 miles of Monday’s quake occurred in 1880, a 6.0 magnitude quake near San Cristobal in Cuba.
