Shaking: The earthquake was felt at Walt Disney World
During hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, there’s an exciting new natural threat that Walt Disney World fans fear: earthquakes! While it’s an exaggeration to say these things are scary, it is true that Central Florida felt minor tremors due to the seismic event. Here’s the latest.
A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the southern Gulf today at around 2 p.m. east, striking about 73 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Service (USGS). It could be felt 310 miles from the epicenter.
The quake was initially recorded as a magnitude 6.1 seismic event by some tracking agencies, so it is not clear whether it will be officially recorded as a magnitude 6.1, 6.4, or somewhere in between. The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of about 10 km. Shallow earthquakes of this size are often felt over wide geographic distances because their seismic waves travel more efficiently along the surface.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida, said shaking was felt in the Orlando, Melbourne, Jacksonville and Miami areas. This includes Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.
Here’s a photo of the site via the USGS:
Walt Disney World has not issued any operational updates in response to the earthquake, and none are expected. Once again, we only felt minor tremors with no injuries or property damage reported. However, many attractions are “temporarily unavailable” for reasons that may be completely unrelated or for precautionary reasons pending safety checks (or a combination thereof).
It’s more offline attractions than usual, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I experienced more attractions with downtime last week when lowering the rope than usual, and that was without any earthquakes! Regardless, here’s the full list:
The Barnstormer Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Country Bear Music Festival Remy Ratatouille Adventure Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Space Train Mount Tiana Bayou TRON Lightcycle Adventure Running Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid
Field reports state that DTB readers inside the Country Bear Theater did not realize an earthquake had occurred, and assumed that “the Bear Band was just tearing the house down, as usual.”
Meanwhile, it was not possible to reach DTB readers inside the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along, because DTB readers knew better than to fall into that trap – err, make this attraction. (Other guests are said to have slept through this, err, earthquake.)
Because the epicenter was located entirely offshore, immediate assessments indicated there was no significant tsunami threat to the US Gulf Coast, Cuba, or the surrounding Caribbean. Seismologists continue to monitor the area for any aftershocks, which are common after an earthquake of this size.
While offshore earthquakes in this region are less common than those along active fault zones south of Cuba, the region is located near the complex tectonic boundary where the North American and Caribbean plates meet. Local authorities and international monitoring agencies are assessing whether tremors or minor coastal disturbances were felt on the western tip of Cuba.
The quake was the largest off Florida since a 4.0-magnitude quake off the Atlantic coast in February 2024. Before that, a powerful 5.8- to 6.0-magnitude quake struck deep in the middle of the Gulf in 2006. Residents of high-rise buildings and coastal cities across the Panhandle and Florida’s West Coast felt a visible sway during that.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake also occurred between Jamaica and Cuba in January 2020. Although the quake was hundreds of miles away, the energy was enough to shake high-rise office buildings in downtown Miami, prompting several precautionary evacuations.
According to the USGS question “Did you feel it?” DATA, a citizen reporting tool used to measure the potential extent of earthquakes. This earthquake could be felt in Orlando and beyond. We were living in central Florida at the time, and I don’t remember anything.
This time, “Did you feel it?” The data we relied on in this report is social media. Our feed was suddenly flooded with the question “What was shaking in Florida?” and “Was there just an earthquake at Walt Disney World?!” And so on.
I wasn’t at Walt Disney World anymore, so I didn’t feel anything, but that wouldn’t have decided anything anyway. According to first-hand reports (via Sarah), I’ve allegedly slept through countless earthquakes, though I maintain there’s no definitive proof of this. Just rumors and guesses.
In the end, you probably don’t need to take any earthquake preparedness measures before your next trip to Walt Disney World. But if you feel like a research trip is in order, check out the Backlot Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood. It still features Earthquake: The Big One, a popular 1990s tourist attraction!
Maybe this seismic event will inspire Universal Studios Florida to restore the disaster! To its correct place. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this entire article is that Catastrophe is criminally underrated, and its sharp satire is misunderstood by guests. He should never have retired. At the very least, we can all agree that what it replaced is absolutely terrible.
