Nearly 1.6 million people affected by M7.8 Mindanao earthquake – NDRRMC

About 1.59 million people were affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off Maasim Beach in Sarangani, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Based on the Situation Report No. 13 issued by the NDRRMC on Sunday, 1,599,350 individuals, or 375,664 families, were affected by the earthquake in 580 barangays in Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.

Of these numbers, 22,109 people are in evacuation centers, while 63,351 were served outside these centers.

NDRRMC also reported a total of 77 deaths as a result of the earthquake after confirming one additional death from the list shared last Friday.

“One person in Jalan, Sarangani, who was previously reported as dead and missing, has been verified dead and has therefore been removed from the list of missing persons,” the NDRRMC stated.

Earlier, the death toll was revised from 78 on Thursday to 76 on Friday after verifying the authenticity of casualty reports.

Sunday’s report also showed 1,339 people infected.

In the meantime. 31 people are still missing.

The changes in numbers are due to ongoing verification, NDRRMC said.

There are also 130 road sections and 47 bridges affected by the earthquake in Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.

Power lines in 47 cities and municipalities were affected by the earthquake, and electricity was restored in 14 of them.

The National Disaster and Emergency Management Commission also recorded 68,511 partially damaged houses and 14,234 completely damaged houses in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

An estimated P1.356 billion worth of damage to infrastructure was also recorded in the same areas.

The NDRRMC said that as of Saturday, assistance worth P318.66 million had been provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Office of Civil Defense and local government units.

A total of 456,070 family food charters were also distributed in Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) on Saturday released satellite data showing landslides that occurred after the devastating Mindanao earthquake.

The PhilSA map showed earthquake-triggered landslides affecting the areas of Calapanit, Ilaia, San Vicente, Kungan, and Calbidong in Glan and Sarangani; and Barangay Butuan, Batulang, Sugal, Naing, San Isidro, and Batulan in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

The total area potentially affected by landslides is about 137.87 hectares, the agency said.

PhilSA said landslide areas were identified by monitoring vegetation loss between pre-disaster (June 01, 2026) and post-disaster (June 14, 2026) images from ESA’s Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites. —RF, GMA News
