A moderate earthquake shakes northern California, and there is no immediate news of damage

SAN FRANCISCO — A rural area of ​​Northern California was hit by the strongest earthquake since 1940 Wednesday morning, causing some casualties but no immediate reports of major damage, officials said.

The epicenter of the quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, was about 7 miles (12 kilometers) northwest of the farming town of Willits, according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake was widely felt, including the coastal city of Fort Bragg. The initial quake was centered about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Fort Bragg at 8:10 a.m. PT, and the USGS said it was about 5 miles (8 kilometers) deep.

The area of ​​Mendocino County, dotted with small farming towns, is located 140 miles (225 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco.

Mendocino County spokeswoman Heather Rose said hospitals reported some infections, but did not have details on their nature or extent. She added that officials planned to meet later Wednesday when more information could be revealed.

The Mendocino County Executive’s Office said in a statement that the power outage was affecting more than 6,000 residents of six towns near the epicenter, and encouraged people to stay off highways and roads to allow crews to inspect damage and make repairs.

Bree Lyon and her colleagues had just opened Club Calpella when the building began shaking, shaking plates and bottles of liquor.

Three other earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 2.7 occurred near the epicenter within an hour.

Leon said the earthquake caused tires to fall from the walls and bottles from the shelves in the restaurant and the adjacent storage room. She and the other servers were cleaning up shortly after to welcome customers for breakfast.

“It wasn’t a big earthquake, but things went all over the place,” she said.

Alan Harris and his family were at their home in Kelseyville, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of the epicenter, when he received an earthquake alert on his mobile phone. Shortly after, the house began to shake.

“I immediately shouted downstairs to my wife and daughter to make sure they were hanging on,” Harris said. “It was scary. You could hear things crashing, mostly on the third floor of the house.”

A security camera inside Harris’ home shook violently when the quake struck. Some loud, crashing noises can be heard in the video before Harris shouts: “Is everyone okay?”

It only lasted about 30 seconds. Framed pictures fell from the walls and the computer screen was shattered, Harris said. He added that there was no significant damage, noting that he did not find any structural damage to the house.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said the MyShake app sent nearly 657,000 earthquake early warning alerts across Northern California. Cal OES has not received any reports of damage or injuries but is coordinating with authorities to assess the impacts, the office said in a statement.
