As rescuers search for survivors, images are beginning to show the extent of the devastation after Venezuela was hit by successive earthquakes on Wednesday afternoon.
Two powerful earthquakes — one with a magnitude of 7.2 and the other with a magnitude of 7.5 — struck north-central Venezuela about a minute apart on Wednesday afternoon. The earthquakes caused the collapse of many buildings in the capital, Caracas, and emergency teams raced to rescue people from under the rubble.
The head of the Venezuelan National Assembly said Thursday that 188 people were killed, more than 1,500 were injured, and 200 others were still trapped. The US Geological Survey estimated the death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000.
The damage was particularly bad in the coastal area of La Guaira, north of Caracas.
Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday described the quakes as “catastrophic.”
These before-and-after photos of buildings and landmarks verified by CBC News show just how hard the area was hit. We will add more as we are able to verify them.

In La Guaira, a photo posted on social media and verified by CBC News shows the iconic Hotel Eduard completely collapsed.
The beachfront resort on Avenida La Playa has 106 rooms, according to travel site Trivago. It also had a large restaurant.
A note posted on the hotel’s Instagram page on Thursday said there was an urgent need for rescue teams.

Carrabaleda is a city located on the central coast of the Caribbean Sea. Residencias Rita Sol Palace has apartments listed on several booking sites, such as VRBO, for rooms close to the beach.
The previous image, taken from Google Maps, shows the 11-storey building. The next photo on the right, verified by CBC, shows nothing except the gate still standing.

The photo above shows another building in La Guaira that appears to have completely collapsed after Wednesday’s earthquakes.
The seven-story building was located directly across the main street of Playa Ali Baba, and next to the Litoral Palacios Hotel, which appears to still be standing. The collapsed building, seen in a photo taken by a Reuters photographer on Wednesday, is now just rubble.
You can also see that the red structure that was previously at street level has now been raised above the rubble.
Venezuelan officials said dozens of buildings collapsed in the area.

Damage can also be seen in Valencia, Venezuela’s third-largest city.
The photos show the cracks running through the Basilica de Valencia Cathedral. In an Instagram post on Thursday, parish priest Joel de Jesús Nuñez Flotes wrote that the cathedral’s two towers were broken and the cathedral and parish office would be closed until further notice.
“Let us remember Venezuela in our prayers,” Flots wrote in Spanish.

CBC was also able to verify before-and-after photos showing damage to the La Guaira state comptroller’s office in Catia la Mar, a city and port located about 30 kilometers northwest of Caracas.
Photos from Katia La Mar show buildings reduced to rubble, scenes of devastation and people searching through the rubble. Other photos show victims and displaced residents taking shelter in the stadium.
The comptroller’s office photo above shows how the building partially collapsed and shifted backwards, with rubble in the street below.
