A 5.9-magnitude earthquake shakes Pakistan and Afghanistan, but no damage has been reported

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan on Saturday, forcing terrified residents across Pakistan to flee their homes, authorities said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake’s magnitude reached 6.1.

Residents felt the tremors in Islamabad, the eastern Punjab province, and the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bordering Afghanistan. It was also felt by the residents of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Emergency services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said that district administrations have been placed on alert.

Anwar Shehzad, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, said initial assessments had found no reports of injuries or damage.

Pakistan lies along an active seismic zone and is frequently affected by earthquakes. A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 2005 killed tens of thousands of people in Pakistan and Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan region divided between Pakistan and India and claimed by both countries.

There was no immediate statement from Afghan officials regarding the earthquake. Afghanistan has also been hit by repeated earthquakes in recent years, claiming thousands of lives.
