Many Venezuelans have criticized the government’s response to last week’s earthquakes, saying there is a shortage of state equipment and manpower, with many communities carrying out rescue work themselves.

The first 72 hours after disaster strike are crucial for finding people, as it has now been more than 100 hours since Wednesday’s quakes.

A man named Wilbur, who said he had lost eight relatives, told the BBC on Sunday that the state was a hindrance, not a help.

“The government decided to close the streets,” he added, adding that this “makes it more difficult to provide assistance.”

“Yesterday we waited from six in the morning until four in the afternoon to get a special permit to come here. We wasted hours,” he said.

There have been multiple reports of people searching through the rubble with their bare hands in an attempt to find their loved ones.

Over the weekend, a Mexican firefighter and disaster assessment specialist told the BBC that the situation was “extremely difficult”, as the country’s rescue equipment was “decades behind international standards”.

Likewise, there were reports that the health system was overwhelmed, with one doctor saying the state struggled to provide health care even on a “normal day” before the disaster.

Opposition leaders say the government has mismanaged the economy and public services for years, reducing its ability to respond. The government itself says rescue workers have been deployed and the state is coordinating the response.
