A man on the banks of the river is among those killed in the Venezuelan earthquakes

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) — A Southern California family is reeling from the loss of a loved one who was caught in the middle of deadly earthquakes in Venezuela.

“It’s hard, it was really hard. I lost my father,” Daniel DeLima said, his voice cracking.

His father, Romildo, was among more than 1,700 people killed in the devastating earthquakes that rocked Venezuela last week.

Delima says his father and stepmother were on vacation and visiting family in Romildo’s native Brazil. Then they traveled to Venezuela.

The hotel they were staying in collapsed. They were taken to the hospital, but Romildo died of his wounds. Daniel’s stepmother is recovering from a broken leg and hip.

“My priority now is to transport his body from Venezuela to Brazil. This is where he wanted to be buried,” Delima said. “I’m trying to coordinate this with the Brazilian side of my family over there. At the moment he’s on his way to Brazil where he wants to be buried.”

Delima said that his father was active in his life, a loving man who took care of his family.

“He loved my kids and he loved me. We had plans. He was going to come back and we were going to go fishing with my son. All I have are memories and he dedicated his life to his kids and his family. He was just a role model for me. Everything…I learned from him.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with his father’s funeral costs and to also help with his stepmother’s medical costs.

He plans to travel to Brazil to help celebrate his father’s life and say goodbye.

“We will miss him very much.”
